Second Quarter SSR
One of the books I read during the second quarter was the Scorch Trials by James Dashner. The Scorch Trials is a sequel to the Maze Runner and is about Thomas and his team of Gladers post-escaping the maze. However, WICKED, the organization that stuck the boys in the maze are still not done with them and force them to cross the Scorch. One of my favorite characters in the Scorch Trials was Newt. Newt was named after Sir Isaac Newton which is fitting because Newt is smart and is always thinking before he acts. Newt is tall, muscular, blond, and has an accent. In the Maze Runner, Newt was in command but in the Scorch Trials he gets that privilege taken away and is named "the glue." Newt can be seen as static, but in the best way possible. This helps the storyline because if Newt were to be constantly changing I would believe that the Gladers would self-destruct. Newt is essential to the Gladers because he is "the glue." Whenever there is a quarrel between the boys, Newt will be the first one to split them up; he is a peacemaker. Newt cares for every boy in the group. I think he is like this because Newt tried to commit suicide before and he knows what it is like to have those types of feelings of loneliness and depression. When Thomas didn't know some of the boys' names, Newt knew and even got to know them closely. Newt also will be the one to stop and think about what they are going to do, instead of just jumping in blindly. Although he is not the leader anymore, you can tell that the boys still have lots of respect for him because he is sometimes leading silently. I think I connected with Newt because he is that one person that will never leave anyone behind. When someone perished while crossing the Scorch, Newt would be the person mourning the most. Newt's relationship with Minho is very interesting. Everyone knows Newt would have been the leader yet Minho gets assigned it. Even thought Newt is jealous, he helps Minho out to be a great leader.

ReplyDeleteI like the idea that Newt is a leave no man behind type person. I find it interesting that even when Minho is chosen to be the leader Newt still helps out. Normally in books you see jealousy take over many characters.
Deletei think that Newt is a strong character because he shows courage by recovering from suicidal thoughts and he pulls forward to prove that despite the fact that he doesn't have the title leader he can still be one
