2nd quarter SSR

The second quarter SSR book I chose was "A long way gone" by  Ishmael Beah. I highly recommend this book because its base on a true story. My favorite character is Ishmael the main protagonist. Ishmael wrote down his experience of the civil war in Sierra Leone and tells us what hes been through. The reason why hes my favorite because he's determine, fearless, and brave. Before the war he was normal kid enjoying life. He lost his family during an invasion of the rebels in his village. The ones that survival was Ishmael, his brother, and couple of friends. Throughout the book they wander around different villages to search for shelter and food to survive. They did horrible acts like stealing food from kids. After a while Ishmael becomes a soldier for the army. The army brainwashes him to get revenge and to execute the rebels for slaughtering his parents. As I keep reading the book Ishmael was rescued by UNICEF. They put him in rehabilitation center, where he struggles to understand his past and to imagine his future. As he finds love from the nurses hes forgives himself and opens up with the people. He was invited to New York City with other kids in the war. When hes there he managed to tell his story to the United Nation which created the book "A long way gone".

  1. After enjoying a nonfiction book I might pick this nonfiction one up since it takes place during the war and it seems interesting.
